Montgomery Sisam Architects and SHAPE Architecture in collaboration

Montgomery Sisam Architects (MSA) and SHAPE Architecture began their collaboration in 2014 with several feasibility reports for the Vancouver School Board, which included the Maple Grove Elementary School. Following Ministry approval of the project under the Seismic Mitigation Program, SHAPE + MSA were retained as the architectural team. Working closely with various departments of the Vancouver School Board and stakeholder groups within the school community, the design team spent several months gathering information, listening to opinions and exploring massing options.

Collaboration over a distance can be challenging, especially ones that span clear across Canada. Through the use of the latest cloud-based collaboration software, the two firms worked on a single Building Information Model (BIM) in real time from their respective offices in Vancouver and Toronto. Despite the collaborative power of the latest BIM technologies, sometimes an in-person conversation cannot be replaced so frequent flights between these two cities ensured confidence in the team's ability to efficiently deliver well-considered design solutions. This joint-venture project directly benefited from each firm's unique technical expertise, local construction knowledge, and building type experience.

As the project nears the end of design and approaches the beginning of construction in early 2019, our team is looking forward to pursuing the next project together.
