Situated in the coastal rainforest of North Vancouver, The Morrison is a 31 unit townhouse development that introduces a new typology to the Moodyville neighbourhood. The site dimensions allow for two rows of townhouses oriented north to south, separated by a semi-public space inspired by London's mews. These slender bright public lane type streets are frequently framed by modest white washed brick structures with inviting entrances and visual connections to building interiors. The character, scale and materiality of this concept precedent influenced the design for this proposal.
By considering the figure and ground as equality important, the former is used to shape the latter while allowing sufficient access to daylight and views within and beyond. A diverse mix of unit types – townhouses, stacked townhouses, two bedroom maisonettes and lock-off units – are all directly access from the courtyard, laneway or adjacent streets.
