The Grange – Heritage Rental Tower

This high rise development includes the conservation of a three-storey heritage building, including the addition of a tower and a podium. The project includes several new communal spaces that provide opportunities for fostering community within the building. Indoor amenity space is centrally located and connected to outdoor podium rooftop communal space. Ample roof garden space provides opportunities for urban agriculture including traditional first nations food and medicinal plants, as well as landscaping with indigenous species.

Taking inspiration from cedar basket weaving, the facade of the new tower building creates a rich, dynamic weave of shadow and light by alternating the recessed balconies at each level. This reinterpretation of an important part of indigenous heritage helps to create a strong identity for the building that celebrates the history and culture of its future occupants.

SHAPE Architecture worked with Fiera Real Estate Investments, Colliers Strategy & Consulting and the BC Indigenous Housing Society for the project’s Indigenous design considerations. This early collaboration allows an opportunity to build First Nations-focused housing, integrated into the design from the start. The building will also be designed to be Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Standards.
