UBC Recreation Centre North Interiors

UBC Recreation Centre North is a new destination for health and wellness on campus that invites the entire university community to participate and engage in recreation formally and informally by utilizing the facility’s three gymnasium courts, an indoor walk/roll/run track, cardio and weight-lifting fitness areas, multi-purpose rooms, universal and gender-specific change areas, and administrative offices. The building edges were informed by the existing context, responding with form and strategically located program and transparency. These edge conditions are connected by a gently sloped accessible exterior breezeway, providing links and routes that had long remained disconnected. Three main entrances converge within the central atrium space, containing a vibrant yellow public stair which serves as a focal point for social interaction and community gatherings. The building integrates programmed areas with spaces for socialization, fostering both active and passive recreation. Its inclusive design features an open layout with intuitive travel routes, ample seating, and accessible entrances. The facility models universal wellness and demonstrates how cohesive urban design and architecture can strengthen campus identity and foster an inclusive environment where everyone belongs.
