Kadenwood Residence

The house is situated on a steeply sloping site in the Kadenwood community of Whistler, offering stunning views of the Tantalus Mountain range. It is designed to resemble a rhizomatic organism that emerges from its forest surroundings. The structure consists of two twin masses that are splayed apart to create a series of intimate outdoor spaces. These two sections are connected underground, which influences the home’s programmatic layout. The larger mass contains the family’s bedrooms, kitchen, and living areas, while the smaller mass houses guest rooms and recreational amenities, such as a gym and sauna.

A spacious outdoor terrace at a lower level links the two masses and features a hot tub alongside a naturalized landscape that flows down to the forest floor. Careful consideration has been given to the placement of windows and terraces to maximize natural light and provide views of the forest—elements that were particularly important to the clients and their family. Our team aimed to maintain a restrained material palette for the home to emphasize the surrounding environment rather than the building itself. The exterior view from the entrance, located upslope, is intentionally austere, creating a sense of calm and privacy for the family. In contrast, the downhill side of the house fully embraces its forest views with large window openings.
