Located in the beachside community of Gonzales Bay, Rhodo is a cluster of three buildings collectively containing 17 ground-oriented townhouses and carefully organized around a central, semi-public courtyard. Recognizing that single-family houses in the Gonzales neighbourhood are becoming less accessible to an increasing number of demographics, Rhodo’s units are configured to accommodate a variety of inhabitants including young families, professionals, and retirees, while encouraging new opportunities for social interaction and access to green space.
Borrowing from local building traditions, Fairfield Road’s continuous hip roof unifies the three structures and becomes a reflection of the site’s unique topography as the buildings respond to the gently sloping grade. The material palette consists of cedar planks and shingles in combination with dark, rock-dash stucco that will weather to suggest that the structures have always been a part of the existing neighbourhood.
