This development was born from the combined needs of two departments within UBC’s Applied Science (APSC) faculty—Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) and the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA). SALA has a need for additional workshop and digital fabrication space to support their growing program and evolving pedagogical objectives, while CHBE needs more creation space for undergraduate engineering students. APSC as a faculty also has ambitions for stronger connections between their departments to foster interdisciplinary learning in a rapidly evolving and complex world. This new two-storey facility will be situated within the existing CHBE Building’s service yard, flanked on three sides by the existing buildings. The design phase employed a framework to build a digital twin model, with contractor and consultant input leading to certain elements achieving an LOD 400+. The Functional Program is comprised of three program components: Teaching & Learning; Workshop & Fabrication; and Exhibition.
