UBC Tennis Centre

Part of the emerging Thunderbird Athletics Precinct, this super-efficient, cost-effective tennis centre includes four indoor leisure courts, four indoor tournament courts, one outdoor leisure court and stadium seating.

A top-lit organizing hub becomes an important destination point on campus and provides administrative offices, change rooms, multi-purpose athletic space, an integrated viewing area, a concession, and social space connected to the courts. The original design also included singles and doubles squash courts which were value-engineered towards the end of detail design. SHAPE Architecture worked exhaustively with UBC Properties Trust to secure the necessary approvals and worked closely with the user group to ascertain the needs of both the student and resident population to arrive at the appropriate program mix. The unique form of the tennis enclosures was described by the UBC Campus Architect as providing a “distinctive architectural form and character for the Athletics and Recreation precinct at UBC.”
